What is Multiple Means of Engagement?
Multiple Means of Engagement is one of the Universal Design for Learning principles. This design proves scientifically that variation in classroom activities and content is necessary for classroom success. All students learn differently and come from different backgrounds. Therefore, students need multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement.
The concept of multiple means of engagement relates to the learner’s motivation and interest. It is the ‘why’ of learning. Cultivating various means of engagement creates an environment of inclusivity. Teachers know that what motivates a student can change quickly, so it is essential to maintain differentiation in classroom instruction.

How Do Multiple Means of Engagement Work?
Including multiple means of engagement in your lesson plans promotes diversity of learning. There are three main guidelines for implementing various means of engagement.
Provide Options for Recruiting Interest
Students' interests are as unique as their backgrounds, and activities must reflect this variety. When students see that their interests are acknowledged and implemented in the classroom, they experience personal validation, which promotes motivation.
Provide Options for Sustaining Effort and Persistence
It can be challenging to maintain motivation in students. Educators must encourage students to create meaningful goals and guide them through scaffolding, collaboration, and constructive feedback. This will motivate students to complete their tasks and achieve their goals.
Provide Options for Self-Regulation
Emotional regulation is essential for effective learning. Not every student has the same capacity to understand their emotions and self-regulate. Educators must often be prepared to model multiple methods of appropriate emotional response.
Similarly, educators should offer multiple forms of emotional expression to their students. This could mean open discussion feedback at the end of a lesson or anonymous student surveys. Either way, each method should reinforce the development of effective coping mechanisms.

How do I Utilize Technology for Multiple Means of Engagement?
The future of education is tech. Educators become aware of new tools and software geared toward engaging students every quarter. Here are a few ways to implement technology for multiple means of engagement.
1. Accessibility and Differentiation
Some of the first means of integrating technology into education involved increasing accessibility for students with diverse learning backgrounds. Tools such as text-to-speech and screen readers have been around for decades, making them easy to apply to multiple learning situations.
Additionally, incorporating the Internet into classroom instruction allowed educators to display images, videos, and other multimedia easily. These tools seem simple now but are some of the most instructionally valuable.
2. Gamifacation
Most teachers are familiar with interactive games such as Kahoot. These are excellent for changing the dynamic of a lesson and providing a way for students to compete or work together for a common goal.
3 . Collaborative Platforms
Even a common platform such as Google Docs can be helpful to for task differentiation. Boards like Padlet and video-sharing apps like Flipgrid make collaborative tasks more engaging. They also allow students who are more tech-savvy to shine.
Creation software like Canva and Storybird not only increases engagement but also encourages the long-term retention of knowledge.
4. Multimedia Resources
Educational videos have become a standby for learning in recent years. They are great for breaking up a lesson and catering to audiovisual learners. Similarly, teachers can swap out the standard PowerPoint for a Prezi and easily create a dynamic interactive learning environment.
5. Feedback and Assessment
There are a lot of tools available for online assessment. Socrative allows you to build unique and display instant feedback. Students remain engaged and informed of their progress.
Another way to differentiate assessment and feedback is to have students create digital portfolios. This way, educators, administrators, and students can review assignments and creative projects in a safe digital environment.
Incorporating multiple means of engagement through technology
Multiple means of engagement address the 'why' of learning, focusing on students' motivation and interest. Diversity is suitable for including different cultures and motivates students to take ownership of their educational goals. Technology is one of the best ways to create multiple means of engagement.
