AI prompts for teachers should complement the educator's expertise, not replace it.

Many teachers report using AI to save time on making lesson plans, differentiating those lessons, and communicating with students and parents. Educators have found that, with the right prompts, they can maximize the quality of their lessons.

This post explores how to utilize AI prompts to enhance lessons and foster creativity in your classroom.

What is an AI Prompt?

AI prompts are the instructions you give to an AI tool to perform a particular task. The most common AI tools are Large Language Models (LLM), like ChatGPT. These tools work by taking user input or instructions, typically text, and performing a specified task.

For example, if you want ChatGPT to edit your blog post, you might submit your written text and ask the LLM, “Review this blog post. Ensure my tone is light and informative and offer suggestions regarding grammar, spelling, and content.” You may also include information regarding the intended audience or the desired length of your post.

Ideally, the LLM will review your prompt and then return what it believes to be the most relevant response. You will still need to review the text, but it could save time by identifying mistakes that you may have missed or by expanding or condensing your language.

How do AI Prompts for Teachers Work?

The proper prompts can be very powerful. However, you must provide clear context. Here are a few things to keep in mind when writing your AI prompt.

Be Specific

Prompts work best when they are short, clear, and organized. You can give your AI tool some background information, such as learning goals and the proficiency level of your students.

Use Examples

If you have lesson plans or activities that are successful but need to incorporate new learning materials, include them in your prompt. This will give the LLM a model for your expected outcome. This will limit the number of corrections you will need to make and, therefore, limit the severity of your headache once you’ve completed your task.

Refine

It is never a good idea to use any output given by AI without reviewing it first. You may have to refine your prompts a few times before you discover the one that yields the perfect response.

How to Use Specific AI Prompts in Education

The best way to achieve your desired result with an AI prompt is to describe your ideal structure for the result. We all have experienced disappointment when attempting to use AI for a task, only to find that it takes twice as long to accomplish what we want.

AI tools like ChatGPT are excellent at filling in the blanks, but not as adept at understanding your intentions. But once you have established the structure for your task, you can be confident that you will get a helpful response.
