How Can Professional Development Give Educators the Confidence to Use AI in the Classroom?
AI policy alone does not adequately prepare educators to use AI in the classroom. The gap isn’t in the policy itself. It’s in the professional development (PD) that must accompany it.
Many teachers are aware of students' use of AI, but are unsure how to address it proactively. Educators realize they must be mindful of AI to prevent dishonesty, ensure student safety, and encourage critical thinking, but not every teacher is convinced AI can help with their practice.
These are just some of the reasons educators need AI professional development tailored to their needs and led by education professionals. Teachers don’t need an AI expert to explain in generic terms how bright the future with AI is.
Teachers require hands-on experience, clear workflow examples, and policy-aligned guidance to help them in a real classroom. Proper PD doesn’t just shift daily practice, but also builds digital literacy and helps teachers model responsible AI use for students. When teachers understand the benefits of AI in the classroom, they feel empowered rather than overwhelmed.
This blog post discusses what educators should expect from PD and how the Kennewick School District saw this need early and decided to act.
Transform Policy into Classroom Practice

You need to have a clear plan to implement AI in the classroom. Students and staff already use AI every day; learn how to utilize it ethically and effectively. Read to implement your AI policy?

Kennewick School District (KSD) serves a diverse student population across four learning models. With AI tools suddenly appearing in classrooms and student work, administrators recognized what the APA Monitor recently described as a national trend: many teachers lack the training needed to integrate AI ethically and effectively.
KSD’s challenges were familiar to districts nationwide:
- A wide range of comfort levels—from skeptics to early adopters
- Growing concerns around plagiarism, misuse, and academic integrity
- Uncertainty around what their policy allowed or restricted
- A need for concrete workflows that teachers could use immediately
The district wasn’t looking for a generic “AI 101.” They needed PD that was relevant, contextualized, and rooted in real teaching.
So they partnered with Banyan Global Learning.
Our Approach
Banyan collaborated with KSD to create a customized half-day training based on our full AI Professional Development for Teachers series. The structure focused on three outcomes district leaders consistently prioritize:
- Saving teachers' time
- Guiding responsible student use
- Aligning classroom practice with district policy
Our approach reflects what research from ESA Learning describes as essential for effective AI adoption: relevant training, contextualized, and directly tied to teachers’ daily realities.
Customized Professional Development
Generic, one-size-fits-all PD sessions fall flat where context, policy, and confidence levels vary widely. What educators need is training that acknowledges their experience, respects their time, and directly addresses the challenges they face every day.
Effective AI professional development is guided by experts who provide hands-on practice, model real workflows, and help teachers stay in control as they introduce AI to students. This means less time wrestling with new technology and more time actually teaching.
Expert-led PD also clarifies the questions educators ask most. Customized PD allows teachers to walk away with confidence, not confusion.

AI can save hours each week by generating lesson plans, grading formative assessments, analyzing student progress, and creating materials tailored to student needs. This gives teachers more time for feedback, connection, and high-impact instruction.
How can students use AI in the classroom?
Students can use AI for research, brainstorming, language support, and practice. When guided by clear policies and teacher expectations, AI becomes a tool for curiosity and deeper learning rather than a shortcut.
